Non-compete: Who is the client?

I consult for company A. They contracted me to Company B, their client. Company B contracted me to one of their clients Company C. Company C is not a client of company A. My non-compete with company A says that I can not accept a position with one of company A's clients that I have performed work for. If company C now wants me to contract to them through a fourth party company D, does my current company, company A have a claim? Company B has released me from any non-compete agreement.

non-compete requires careful reading

I cannot answer your question without reviewing the language of the non-compete (which sounds more like an anti-piracy agreement). Asking a lawyer to interpret a contract without reading it is like asking a doctor to diagnose your condition without going in for an examination. Whatever answer you get is likely to miss something that could be very important.
