Is fmla legal if an employer send an employee an expired fmla notice and never logged it in the payroll system that the employee is being put on fmla and employee goes from being active to terminated. Does that qualify as a legal fmla?

I got terminated while out on approved workers compensations. I received an expired fmla notice from my employer stating that I was put on fmla starting the fate I was injured. I was later terminated for not returning when was still under approved wc leave by company physician. My employer never put me on fmla or any kind of leave in the payroll system. I went from being active to terminated. Is that a legal fmla leave?
