Is an employer required to give a day off in a regular scheduled workweek?

I am currently working at a retail department store. I was talking with another employee and she stated she was scheduled 14 days in a row without one day off. Is that legal? I told her I thought it was required for employers to provide their employees with at least one day off within the set workweek, even if they are only working 40 or less hours. She told me unless you're getting paid overtime they don't have to give you a day off. I was skeptical, but wanted to make sure I knew my rights in case they try to pull this with me. Thank you.
