Is a Non-Compete clause in a contract enforceable if I signed it when I was hired as an Independent

I was hired as an IC with a 1099 for first year and half of employment (probably should have been W2 from the start). I signed a contract with a no-compete clause to get the job. It even says in the contract that I am an Independent Contractor with no claims to employee benefits. They eventually moved me to W2 with no new contract signed, would that make the contract and that clause null and void? I gave my 30 days notice to leave and I was told to leave the next day. I now wish to start my own business.
