I'm an approved intermittent FMLA. I have learned by position is being eliminated. I have been summoned to my HR Department to discuss options. Can they speak to me about options while I'm leave.

My position is being eliminated because some not all of the functions are being out-sourced. I had been told I would be transferred to another area of my department but have now learned they want my funding so a transfer of that type is not possible. I was told I can look for other opportunities in the organization. Yesterday, I received an email to attend a meeting in my HR Department to discuss transfer opportunities and other options. I think I am going to be laid off. It would not be necessary to go to HR if all that was happening was a transfer. So, after this long explanation, my question is do I have to talk to them and can they lay me off while I'm on FMLA.
