If laid off, do I have to return the retention bonus I was given when hired?

In Dec 2010 I was hired as a engineer and give a 10K retention bonus provided that I worked at least 18 months for the company, but last Friday they laid me off, and they want their retention bonus back. The paper that I signed simply stated that I agreed to work for them at least 18 months, no additional terms or conditions.
