If I'm paid commision at my salon in MA, can they force me to stay at work when I don't have clients

Hi, I have worked at a salon in Mass for 5 years now, and since I have been on commision, for 3 years, I have set my own schedule and could come and go as long as I had no clients. The owners now want us to stay and work our schedule in case walk ins show up. I do not get paid unless I have a client, so by law do I have to stay because I am technically still an employee there? thank you
