I relocated to another state with my company but it didn't work out for personal reasons so I relocated back, my current position was not available here so they temporarily put me in a lower position and cut my salary, can they legally do that?

I relocated to another state for family with my current company and current position. It did not work out so I came back home. My company did not have my current position available so they have temporarily given me a lower position and have cut my salary. Can they legally do that?
