I need a couple weeks family leave and the company is too small for FMLA, what rights do I have?

I have been employeed here for 24 years. I rarely am off work except for doctors and scheduled vacation. I have a family crisis and need a few weeks off, not only for my own health but to help my son and his 2 daughters (one handicapped) get settled in new place, start school, and start their new beginning. I am getting resistance to be off work for my family from my boss. I don't want to loose my job and I need to know my rights. What rights do I have to family leave? I know I don't quality for FMLA (company is too small with 2 full time and 2 part time) but my family and myself need for me to be off for a couple weeks. HELP!!!

I am sorry, but there is probably no good answer to your question. Without FMLA you really are dependent on the relationships that you have within a small company. Assisting your son and his daughters is important and you need to talk to the owner and, if you are one of the full-time employees maybe also talk to the part-time employees to see if they can step up and help during this short period. I do not know the cycles in your business, but the knowledge of someone with 24 years of experience is not something that ownership would want to lose. You may want to offer to train any of the part-timers on some of the things you do to allow for a smooth transition to being gone for 2 weeks. Sorry, I wish I had a better answer for you.
