I am currently on a leave, due to having surgery. My employer may not hold my job for me. I'm not protected under FMLA because I only worked there 4 months. Can I apply for unemployment when I have recuperated?

My employer stated they may not be able to hold my job for me. I only worked there 4 months, and needed surgery. So, can I receive benefits when I recuperate, thus able to work? Apparently, I was told I'm not protected under FMLA due to short time on job.
