How can you be sure you weren't discriminated against due to age?

Recent graduate from a medical assistant program. Externship site: Performed 180 hours of clinical time at the facility, and applied upon completion. The individuals in the office I worked in put in a good word for me. I was qualified for the position. I was not hired, and told another was hired instead. I applied again, widening my options for hire to include any position they felt I qualified for. During that time, I spoke with the direct of the externship process at school. She indicated it was a shame that I had not been hired because of a recent hiring freeze. I had never been told that, and it contradicted what was truth. The hospital hired two individuals in a three week period. One was hired a few days before my interview (she was 23), and another was hired instead of me as a result of the interview (I do not know her age but I do not believe she is my age either). Another individual was hired, about a week or two later and she is also younger than me (not sure of her age, but she's younger too). As I stated, I sent another application, resume and cover letter offering to interview for any position they felt I qualified for, and never received word back. In the meantime, they recently hired another person for the positions I had submitted interest in, and she is 23 as well. I am 48. I wonder if I'm the victim of age discrimination?
