Does your severance contract hold when your company is bought?

My company is for sale. So I got a job offer at another company. I am trying to decide if I should entertain a counter offer from my current company. If I do decide to stay (and pass on the new offer), I would like some kind of security as well as more money. If I negotiate a severance package at this point, will it hold if my current company gets purchased by another company. In other words, would the new (buying) company have to legally honor the severance contract with the current (selling) company?
