Does confidentiality clauses relating to third parties apply to lawyers and why not?

In a non-compete contract I signed, it indicates that all information is strictly confidential and that permission from the other party must be received prior to releasing it. If I send a letter from a lawyer to my former employer trying to negotiate some terms of the agreement, could my former employer claim that I violated the agreement by having an attorney involved?
