Can the district release information that can hurt my potential employment elsewhere?

I have just been non-renewed due to poor performance. My employer and I worked out a separation agreement in which I will receive a postive recommendation from the school istrict if a potential employer contacts them. I have just received a letter from the school district, which states the Janesville Gazette is looking for information regarding the board meeting (which was closed) and what was discussed. The district states, that within 5 days of the date of the letter (which was yesterday, May 4, 2010, and I received it today) they will release this information. Does this nullify the agreement with the district as this employment issue was discussed in closed session and that now any potential employer will now have knowedge that I was let go rather than resigned? Where do I stand, and how can I stop this?
