Can my pay be deducted if I've given noticed but decided to stay on temporarily and then decided to leave?

My Fiancé put his two week notice in at his job and then decided to stay on as temporary help for two days a week. He then decided to completely leave shortly after and his boss told him that she was taking his final check from his regular pay to minimum wage because he quit. Is this even legal?
