Can an employer lay off someone for no reason and then hire someone else?

I recently got laid off from my job. The reason is times were tough and the owner couldn't make the numbers work in order to keep me, yet after a week of me being gone, he hired someone else for 50 cents less than what I was getting paid. I feel I was wrongfully let go for no reason. I never was given a verbal warning or written warning. I always showed up for work on time and would call if I was going to be late or not coming in at all. When I needed days off, I would give them a months notice in advance. I know Massachusetts is an employee at will state, but,can this be consider discrimination?
