Can an employer demand to see texts on an employee's personal phone?

After seeing an employee texting another employee on their personal phone, the employer demanded to see / "made the employee show" the text exchanges between the two employees. As I recall, this can only be done by court order or a search warrant and is illegal. Am I remembering this correctly?
