Apply for unemploymet after receiving severance package

The department I work for will be lying off 75-80% percent of its workforce tentatively speaking by October 2003. All who will be laid off will be given a severance package. Please explain to me how long you must wait to after receiving your package to be able to apply for unemployment? Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

unemployment and severance

You don't have to (and should not) wait to apply for unemployment once you are laid off. The severance pay will affect how many weeks you will have to wait to receive unemployment checks, so you want to get the process started as soon as possible.
