Clarification on employment contract regarding terms of notice.

I am employed by a company in Massachusetts. Upon being hired, I had to sign a contract obligating me to give 4 weeks of notice before my date of resignation. I have two questions based off of this agreement. Legally am I required to agree to the term of notice if I decide the work environment is not suitable and decide to leave for a new opportunity? If I were to be let go by my employer do they have to furnish severance pay to the agreed upon term for notice of resignation?
